SENIOR Software Engineer – University of Colombo

The University of Colombo will entertain applications from suitably qualified persons for the above posts to contribute to new ICT-Based Projects on an assignment basis up to 17th March 2025.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A First or Second Class in BSc. Special degree in Computer Science/ Computer Engineering from a recognized University. 

OR 

2. A pass in the BSc. Special/General Degree in Computer Science/ Computer Engineering from a recognized University.

AND 

• At least 10 years of experience in software development, with a focus on web application development 
• Proven experience in developing scalable, maintainable, and secure PHP-based web applications 
• Strong experience with modern PHP frameworks (e.g., Laravel, Symfony, or CodeIgniter) 
• Experience with database management systems, especially MySQL 
• Experience in leading technical teams, mentoring junior developers, and collaborating with cross-functional teams 
• Experience in developing systems for the state university system will be considered an added advantage 
• Educational and/or professional qualifications and/or experience in information security will be considered an added advantage

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and maintain Web Applications and Systems used by the University 
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to gather requirements and design efficient solutions 
• Write clean, maintainable and optimized PHP code 
• Ensure the functionality, scalability and security of developed web applications 
• Troubleshoot, test and resolve issues with applications 
• Document development processes and support end-users where necessary 
• Re-engineer existing processes and implementing system enhancements to optimize workflows and improve productivity

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES :

• Expert-level proficiency in PHP and web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, • MySQL) 
• Strong experience with PHP frameworks such as Laravel, Symfony, or CodeIgniter 
• Knowledge of front-end technologies will be an added advantage 
• Strong leadership skills with experience in team management and mentoring 
• Excellent problem-solving and debugging abilities 
• Good understanding of security best practices and experience implementing them

Other:

• The appointment will be on a contract basis initially for a period of one year and the period of the contract will be renewable subject to the performance of the selected person and the requirement of the university
