Role Purpose
▪ To contribute to the achievement of Teaching Centre Academic Quality Plan and business objectives by supporting the delivery and development of high-quality adult courses
▪ To deliver and facilitate quality teaching and effective learning of English
▪ To support the wider aims of British Council and its cultural relations mission
Main Accountabilities
Support British Council’s global English strategy by:
-delivering teaching to the highest standards of ELT
-enhancing British Council’s reputation as a world authority in ELT and the provider of choice for English language teaching in Sri Lanka
-committing to continuing professional development and sharing of best practices
-providing line management support for up to 6 teachers at the Colombo/Kandy centre
-duty manager/ emergency officer duties when scheduled Responsibilities:
-Ensuring teaching meets learner needs and expectations
-Ensuring teaching meets Teaching Quality standards and organisational expectations
-Maintaining good relationships with customers and colleagues
-Supporting the teaching centre’s activities and British Council plans
-Contribute to the content and delivery of the adult courses programme
Main Duties: Plan, prepare and deliver 15 hours of high-quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles and complete teaching related duties to specified standards
Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy
Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices
Contribute to the development of lasting, mutually beneficial relationships by enhancing students’ understanding of contemporary UK
Support local marketing and promotional strategy, and assist the teaching centre team in delivering excellent customer service
Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for the following areas:
-Child protection
-Equal Opportunity and Diversity
-Safety and Security
-Anti-fraud
-Information management
Contribute to the smooth day-to-day running of the Kandy Teaching Centre operation as a Duty Manager (when required) and Emergency Officer (on a daily basis) and a member of the Colombo Academic Management Team.
Provide performance management, developmental coaching, and counselling to support the wellbeing and professional development of up to six line managees, and offer advice to teachers on a range of teaching-related issues
Work as a core member of the Adult Learning team, contributing to the quality improvement of existing courses, researching, and developing new products and materials and providing academic and logistical support for the smooth running of all adult courses. Maintaining, updating, and assigning topics for the Centre’s Value-Added online and face-to face courses and clubs. This includes corresponding with teachers and liaising with Ops about scheduling and gathering and developing content.
Minimum/essential
Role specific knowledge and experience:
-DELTA or Dip TEFL/TESOL persuing or completed
-High proficiency in English i.e. IELTS Band 8/9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module
