The University of Ruhuna (also known as Ruhuna University) is Sri Lanka's sixth oldest university and the only university in the southern region. Established in 1978 and elevated to full university status in 1984, it is located in the Matara area. The university's central campus is in Wellamadama, with other campuses in Kamburupitiya and Galle.
